Sandman's Stories by Heiki Vilep is a collection of bedtime stories perfect for children to read or listen to just before going to bed. Marilyn's parents are too tired to tell her a bedtime story and put her to sleep one night. Marilyn is trying her best to fall asleep by counting sheep so that sleep will come, but she is unable to drop off. She opens her eyes and she sees a real sandman standing next to her. She tells him her plight and he thinks of putting sleep sand in her eyes. But Marilyn wants to hear a real story. Now it becomes the sandman's job to tell Marilyn his made up stories and put her to sleep every night.
The book is enjoyable and it is perfect for parents and grandparents to read out to kids at night. The stories are exciting and imaginative and will keep kids enthralled. The illustrations that accompany each story are bright and colorful and capture the essence of the story beautifully. Whether it is the story of The Sock and the Boot, Nail Neil's dream of good folk, all the stories will entertain young readers with their charm, humor and mystery.
I recommend this book to all parents to keep in their personal collection because, apart from having good bedtime stories, it will also help children imagine and tell them about different types of people. The best thing about these stories is that they cover diverse topics, thereby making the collection an engaging and entertaining read.

“Richie can’t read,” the Sandman replied. “He looks at all the pictures and then gobbles the book up. He is especially fond of cookbooks with pictures. He said they were especially delicious. And fairy tales were also quite okay. The bitterest ones, he said, were sad poems. Once he came down with a sad mood disease after reading sad poems and had to stay in bed for two weeks.”
“What are you on about!” Marilyn laughed. “Nobody can get ill from just reading books.”
“Richie can because he reads everything very thoroughly. He finishes every book up to the very last bite,” the Sandman said. “If I hadn’t given him a fun children’s book, the back cover of which was spread with jam, Richie would have died of sadness.”
“And did this jammy children’s book cure him?” Marilyn asked.
“Like magic!” the Sandman replied. “I saw him complete the reading of the sweet back cover in a couple of minutes. And after that he got straight up and felt fine. He even held a party to celebrate his recovery and invited his closest neighbors. The table was full of books and the party went on until the early hours of dawn.
Roland the Rat from next door read so many fairy tales that his belly touched the floor and he couldn’t get through the rat hole, so he had to spend the night at Richie’s.”

Jan was a sloppy child. He didn’t take good care of his things at all. Blocks and cars were lying around on the floor, the Teddy Bear was hanging on the doorknob by a string and the corners of picture books were curled. mother scolded Jan all the time:
“How come you’re so sloppy! good children always clean up the mess after playing.”
Sometimes Jan tried to be a good child and pick up his things, but already the next day he left everything lying around.
One evening, when Jan was in bed already, he looked at the wooden pattern on the closet door and started imagining all sorts of things. It seemed to him that one long zig-zag stripe is a river and the darker patches next to it are bushes. After he looked a little bit longer, he already pictured imaginary mountains in the distance and some sort of strange town. This was more like a cave town.
Jan kept on looking and looking and finally something very strange happened. It seemed as though somebody had moved in one of the caves. Jan strained his eyes and indeed – long shadows moved around in other caves as well.
Jan got scared and pulled the blanket over his head. When he peeked out from under the blanket again, there was silence in the caves. Jan kept on looking and suddenly long moving shadows showed up in the caves again. The shadows looked like big monsters who kept bumping into one another while bustling back and forth.
Finally, Jan started to feel as if the monsters were headed towards him. They got bigger and bigger and Jan backed off with the bed away from them. The room stretched and became very, very big. So big that the window from which the street lamp could be seen, shrunk to a tiny spot in the distance.
Together with the room, Jan’s fear also grew. The bed in which he lay turned into a wagon and the Rocking Horse that had otherwise been lying on its side in the corner, was now hitched to Jan’s bed and looked to be the size of a real horse.
The monsters on the closet door had already grown so big that they didn’t fit on the closet door anymore and climbed off it. They stamped their ugly hoofs and swung their long hands with three fingers at Jan.
“Gee up!” Jan shouted at the Rocking Horse and it started galloping head over heels. The opposite side of the room had to be somewhere far on the horizon and they headed in that direction.
“What am i going to do now?” Jan wondered. The horrible clip-clop of monsters could be heard in the distance and they were followed by a whirling cloud of dust.
One particularly big monster spouted fire out of its nostrils and bellowed in an awful voice.
“I need help!” Jan thought. “Where are my tanks and tin soldiers? Where are my blocks for building a fortress?”

In Lucy by Heiki Vilep, Lucy is quite an active little girl. She just celebrated her fourth birthday and she was feeling quite grown up, even though her older brother kept trying to set things right, like pointing out that cars don't fly and there's no such thing as a witch. Lucy does have her imagination, though. When visiting the ice cream parlor with her brother and her father - having an ice cream party her father says - Lucy imagines a kingdom of ice cream complete with an Ice Cream King, and Ice Cream Queen, an Ice Cream Prince and an Ice Cream Princess and an ice cream parlor where everything is edible and can become part of the ice cream itself. But, when Lucy tries to prove that she can perform magic like a real witch, her plan goes a little awry - all she manages to do is splash everyone and everything at the dinner table. Even Grandpa's smart suit and Granny's pretty floral dress are soaked, along with the pies that Granny had baked. Lucy thinks she is in trouble, until she hears Grandpa chuckling in the washroom.

Growing up is hard to do. There is so much to learn, so much to imagine, so much to create. Heiki Vilep has written a charming story about a little girl who wants to know everything, do everything, create everything, all at once. She tries, as many four-year-olds will try, and through her attempts and humorous failures, this little girl learns the power of family love that will remain with her no matter what mistakes she makes along her journey of learning to live. Colorfully illustrated, this is a real treasure of a story.

Lucy in a Sand Hole by Heiki Vilep is a collection of three delightful short stories revolving around Lucy and her adventures. The stories are enchanting and they all have beautiful concepts for young readers. In "An especially special pancake," Lucy, Andy and Madeline decide to make pancakes as there is no one in the house. "How Lucy became a war nurse" describes how Lucy and her friends play a war game and Lucy takes care of the wounded with gauze bandages, medicines and vitamins. The last short story, "Lucy in a sand hole," is a fun tale where Lucy entertains readers by making sand cakes to sell to pay for her new bike she is planning to buy. All the stories have different themes, which make the book an entertaining read.
The author’s voice is very nice and engaging. The stories are detailed and descriptive with colorful illustrations that help readers connect and identify well with the characters and scenes. The stories have their own magic and whimsy which will keep children engrossed till the very end. Lucy is adorable and so are the rest of the characters. What makes the book relatable is the fact that kids can do everything that Lucy and her friends do in the stories. Whether it is Lucy making sand cakes, her meeting the alien, making pancakes and messing up the kitchen, or reconquering the hill, all the stories are fast paced and charming.

Lucy Invents a Candle Blower by Heiki Vilep is an exciting collection of short stories revolving around a little girl called Lucy. Each story has a different theme that is filled with fun, adventure and humor and will take kids on an interesting journey along with Lucy. The underlying themes of the stories are humor and adventure and the author doesn't disappoint readers with his imagination and creative mind. Lucy will warm the hearts of readers with her adorable and mischievous behavior, and motivate them to try out doing naughty and adventurous things at home and otherwise. The style of writing is simple, laced with humor, and all the characters are portrayed well so that they remain in the hearts of readers for a long time. Lucy is like any other normal child; it's just that she is mischievous and attempts a lot of things which see her getting into trouble, but in a good way.

The book is perfect as a bedtime storybook, and parents and grandparents can read out the stories to their kids and grandkids. The illustrations are really cute and they give pace and movement to the story. Lucy and Andy's mischief keep the stories alive as the author involves them in one adventure after the other, keeping young readers glued to the book. Lucy's enthusiasm to experience everything and live life to the fullest is infectious. Stories influence the thinking of kids and encourage them to participate in the activities around them.

Lucy and Madhouse Canteen by Heiki Vilep is a charming story for children. The stories that revolve around Lucy, Madeline and Tim take readers through interesting experiences, places and happenings. Each story has its own charm and whether it is the story of the 'Madhouse Canteen,' or the three of them becoming famous writers, or the other stories, children are treated to some sort of mischief, humor or adventure which will keep them entertained until the very end. Lucy, Tim and Madeline will steal the hearts of young readers with their antics, and their parents and grandparents complement them beautifully in all the stories.
I enjoyed the collection of stories in the book. Kids are introduced to new ideas and concepts that will make them more creative and imaginative. The illustrations complement the stories beautifully by giving pace and movement to the scenes and life to the characters. Each story takes readers through the different experiences of Lucy, Madeline and Tim. Parents and grandparents can use it as a bedtime storybook for their kids and grandkids. The stories can also be used for read aloud sessions in school libraries and classrooms. The author's writing style is fluid and laced with humor that makes the stories enjoyable. Kids will love Lucy, Madeline and Tim and also Ed by the time they finish reading.
